Right in our backyard (not literally b/c I don't have a backyard) but up in the mountains - Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple resides. Besides being car sick and thinking I was going to have to get out of the car and walk up the mountain, this temple was worth the pain! It has an enormous number of Buddhist statues throughout the grounds - one known as “1,000-Armed Standing Kannon” which stands 16 feet tall. There is also a giant maple tree over 400 years old that lives here.
The day we went it was actually drizzly and overcast but I think that's what made it even more spectacular. As hard as you try, pictures do not do this temple justice. It is one of those places and moments where you wish you could capture the air, the beauty and the calmness and bottle it up. Your breath slows and heart warms while you're a guest here. Truly beautiful!

The remainder of our afternoon we went on a scenic drive throughout Itoshima, ate delicious oysters (again!), scallops, fish and squid cooked right on the grill that sat in the middle of our table. By the time we got home that evening we were already craving more!
beautiful matt and ash.
